Sioma Falls Fishing Safari

A 5 night fishing safari combining two different camps on two different parts of the Zambezi River

A 2-in-1 Fishing Experience

The Sioma Fishing Safari takes place in Barotseland but not on the Barotse floodplains. It begins with 1 or 2 nights at Mutemwa Lodge before you set off upriver fishing all day to the Sioma Falls (the second largest Falls on the Zambezi). Whilst you are fishing upriver, we drive around and setup a mobile safari camp on a remote beach below the falls where you spend the next 2 or 3 nights fishing the deep gorge water for the large tigers lurking below. You will then fish all the way back down to Mutemwa for the last night.

What will you love about this fishing trip?

3 highlights from this fishing safari include:

1. Variety of water

This 80km stretch of the Zambezi changes from wide and slow flowing to deep and charging through the gorge meaning there is a variety of water to fish in many ways.

2. experience 2 camps

Combine your first and last night in the comfort of Mutemwa Lodge with your middle ‘fishing nights’ on a beautiful private beach.

3. Minimal Fishing Pressure

We are the only commercial fishing operation that has access to the top 50km of this stretch of river meaning there is minimal fishing pressure and great exclusivity.

Where does it take place?

The 5 night trip begins 80km downstream at Mutemwa Lodge in the Upper Zambezi where you spend the first night. The next day you begin fishing upstream all the way to the base of the Falls.

Day 1: Arrival day

Your Sioma Barotse Experience will begin at Mutemwa Lodge, where you will have access to about 30 – 60km of the Upper Zambezi. The water here is wide and shallow with shallow rapids and islands.

Days 2 – 4

The next day you begin fishing upstream all the way to the base of the Ngonye or Sioma Falls. Whilst you are fishing, we drive around and setup a fully functional mobile safari camp on a private white beach below the Falls. Your next few days will be spent fishing the deep channels and rapids around the falls

Departure Day

After breakfast, you will head out with the boats again for the fishing journey downstream back to Mutemwa Lodge from the Sioma Falls.

Fishing Information

The fishing at Sioma Falls is excellent and you stand a good chance of catching a big tiger.

The camp overlooks an expanse of “coral white” beach and the basalt black cliffs which harness the mighty Zambezi River. Your day of fishing to the Sioma Falls starts this morning. Fishing the deep channels and rapids all the way from Mutemwa Lodge, through the Top and Kaale Rapids to a beach below the Sioma Falls. There are some very deep channels and some excellent runs to fish for the large and aggressive tigerfish that lurk in these waters. Packed lunches and coolboxes are supplied. In terms of fishing tackle: We offer the attached list of suggested extras as a guideline, based on 15 years of fishing observations. New trends, equipment and items should always be considered.
